How did the renaissance change man's view of man?
· Individualism: Almost every aspect of the Renaissance reflects the increase in individualism during this period. As serfs began to gain freedom and realize their potential, they were able to invest in themselves in various ways. Some methods included art and architecture. In relation to the change in atmosphere of the churches, people during the Renaissance were able to examine themselves and their personal relationships with God. Rather than just view God as an unapproachable and fearful figure, the Renaissance allowed people to look at religion from a different perspective. They were able to improve their character using their religious beliefs rather than just understand the basic principles of good and evil.
· Humanism: Similar to individualism, various aspects of the Renaissance further developed the concept of humanism. For instance, sculptures such as those in churches increasingly focus on detailed human characteristics rather than the basic concepts of good and evil. In comparison to the Middle Ages, individuals during the Renaissance were able to delve deeper into human nature and appreciate characteristics such as emotions. The Renaissance allowed individuals to examine characteristics past the human exterior.
· Feudalism & Capitalism: As a result of serfs gaining more freedom, they were somewhat able to break away from the very strict structure of feudalism. In addition, when letters of credit expanded, the money supply increased consequently, expediting trade. People were more focused on material objects and enjoying life, and this introduced the basic concept of capitalism during the Renaissance. People were able to look beyond the rigid feudalistic structure. The Renaissance allowed for people take a different approach politically.
· Idealism: In some ways, the Renaissance added “colour” to life and promoted idealism. A literal example of this concept id the change in atmosphere in the churches between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In the Middle Ages, people were afraid of God and his power, and this was a somewhat pessimistic view of religion. In contrast, during the Renaissance people took an more optimistic approach with religion, and focused on forming a relationship with God. As a result, people were able realize that the present life is just as important as the afterlife.
· Secularism: As more individuals were educated and rational, they began to question the ways of the church. During the Middle Ages, the Church, Pope, and Bible were crucial in every aspect of one's life. However, this changed during the Renaissance as people began to question the teaching of the Church. An example of this change is in architecture. As the church slowly lost its fearful nature, it began to lose power, and people were no longer as frightened as they were before. The Renaissance changed Man's view of the Church and religion.
· Rationalism: Rational thought allowed those in the Renaissance to shift their interests. For instance, people shifted some of their attention from religion to Classical learning such as ancient Greek and Roman architecture. In addition, individuals were able to change their perspective and look at things from a different angle. They began to approach life with a focus on rational thought rather than faith.
The Renaissance was indeed a time of great “rebirth” as people changed their outlooks in different areas of their lives. The Renaissance allowed Man to appreciate and study Man in more depth.
